PROCEDURE
Colonic surgery is usually performed as keyhole surgery under general anaesthetic, but open surgery may be pertinent if the situation so requires.
When necessary, large parts of the colon can be removed without appreciable impairment to intestinal function.

AFTERCARE

The patient is encouraged to move about at the latest one day after the operation and can enjoy liquid food. Pain medication is provided when required.

The length of the hospital stay depends on the extent of the procedure. Discharge is considered when the intestines have begun functioning and the patient is able to urinate and eat normally and can make do with oral pain medication.

Patients who undergo surgery for colonic diverticulosis return home an average of two days after the operation. The skin wound is normally closed with subcutaneous stitches that disappear of their own accord and do not need to be removed.

An appointment at the surgeon’s clinic is booked about one month after the procedure for follow-up. How long you are off work for depends on the type and extent of the surgery and is an average of two to four weeks.

DIVERTICULITIS AND CARE

A diverticulum is a bulge in the intestinal wall, if there are more than one we talk about diverticulosis. The disease is common and over 70% of those over 80 years of age have diverticula. The disease is benign and is not cancerous.

SYMPTOMS:

In general, diverticulosis is asymptomatic. Sometimes, there can be a build-up of gas, the stomach swells and there is a variation in intestinal function.

CAUSES:

There are suspicions that a lack of fibre in the diet can cause diverticula.

DETECTION AND MONITORING:

The disease is investigated using X-ray investigations or endoscopy of the colon. Asymptomatic disease does not require follow-up.

THE DIVERTICULA ARE INFLAMED

Symptoms of inflamed diverticula are a sharp pain in the lower-left part of the abdomen. This always requires a consultation with a doctor and a course of antibiotics.
