We offer several types of laser vision correction at Eira: ReLEx SMILE, Lasik, Femto-Lasik and PRK.

ReLEx SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) represents the absolute latest technology in the field of refractive surgery. Thanks to this new technology, it is possible to correct refractory errors without making a flap in the cornea as in the past. The markedly smaller wound in the cornea minimises any dry eye problems following the surgery. The SMILE procedure is performed using the VisuMax femtosecond laser, manufactured by Carl Zeiss Meditec AG.

The laser treatment in a Femto-Lasik procedure is based on cornea treatment with the help of laser pulses that have a width of approx. 0.54 mm. This makes the operation more accurate than in the past. We also have an eye-tracker that controls the movements of the eye and ensures that the laser beams hit the correct spot.

The Lasik technique is based on laser treatment under the surface layer. The benefit of this is that the recovery is fast and your visual acuity can be almost normal only one hour after the surgery. It takes a little longer before you achieve the final visual acuity.

DIFFERENT METHODS OF LASER VISION CORRECTION

ReLEx SMILE

  • The most up-to-date method – NEW
  • Good results
  • Good results in cases of large refractive errors
  • No knives
  • Keyhole surgery, no flaps
  • Gentle, experienced as painless
  • Minimal impact on the sensitive surface of the eye
  • Minimal risk of dry eyes
  • Short convalescence
  • Small wound surface on the cornea; 2–3 mm
  • Only one laser is required
  • Short treatment time (26 seconds/eye)

FEMTO-LASIK

  • Older method
  • Good results
  • More operations performed
  • No knives
  • Large wound surface; 21 mm
  • Requires surgery with  a flap
  • Greater risk that the flap coming loose in the event of impact or injury
  • Longer healing time
  • Greater risk of dry eyes
  • The vision goes black during the surgery
  • Two lasers are required

PRK

  • Older method
  • Good results
  • Epithelial tissue is removed using mechanical scraping
  • Large wound surface; 25 mm
  • Greater heat pain
  • Slower healing
  • The eyes are sore for several days
  • Requires bandage contact lens for three days
  • Sensitive to sunlight

Pre-examination for laser vision correction and refractive lens exchange

Consult the hospital optician and find out if you can correct your refractive error with laser vision correction or refractive lens exchange. During the pre-examination, your eyes are photographed and measured by the hospital optician using various instruments in order to work out which method is most appropriate for your eyes.

ReLEx SMILE laser vision correction

Thanks to the latest SMILE technology, it is possible to correct refractive errors without making the traditional incision in the cornea. The surface of the eye remains more intact and the risk of dry eyes is reduced. Studies show that the results of SMILE treatments are excellent.

WHO IS LASER VISION CORRECTION SUITABLE FOR?

Laser vision correction is suitable for those who are both long and short-sighted and people with astigmatism. The lower age limit is 18 years, there is no actual upper age limit. It is preferable to undergo this treatment once changes in your glasses prescription are no longer taking place. People over the age of 60 should first consult and ophthalmologist, after which we can consider whether refractive lens exchange would be more appropriate. A refractive lens exchange makes it possible to get rid of your glasses.

Glasses and contact lenses are impractical in many professions and hobbies. Laser vision correction offers one alternative in terms of being able to see without optical aids. Many people decide to undergo laser vision correction because they no longer want to wear glasses, but cannot cope without them. Contact lenses cannot be used for one week prior to the pre-examination or the surgery.

LASER VISION CORRECTION IS NOT APPROPRIATE IF:

  • you are under 18 years of age
  • you have an eye disease, e.g. cataract
  • you have keratoconus (thin cornea)
  • you are pregnant or breastfeeding

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THOSE WHO ARE GOING TO UNDERGO LASER VISION CORRECTION

  • Contact lenses may not be used for one week prior to the treatment.
  • Alcohol may not be consumed within 24 hours of the treatment.
  • Do not use eye make-up prior to the treatment.
  • Eyelashes may not be permanently extended or coloured for two weeks prior to the treatment and a break of one month is recommended following the treatment.
  • Avoid strong fragrances, they can damage the function of the laser technology.
  • You can eat and drink normally prior to the treatment.
  • Set aside about two hours for the treatment.
  • You cannot drive a car immediately after the treatment; it is a good idea to arrange a lift home (someone to pick you up, a taxi, public transport or similar).
  • Purchase the necessary eye drops at a pharmacy prior to the treatment (you are given the prescription at the pre-examination). Antibiotic drops should be stored in the fridge.
  • The treatment is paid for on the day of the surgery once the treatment is complete. Find out more about our payment options.

LASER VISION CORRECTION APPARATUS AT EIRA HOSPITAL

Eira Hospital’s range of laser vision correction methods was expanded in January 2013 when we added ReLEx SMILE, a new method of laser vision correction, to the range. The word SMILE stands for small incision lenticule extraction. Thanks to the new SMILE technology, it is possible to correct refractive errors without making a traditional flap in the eye. A femtosecond laser is used to make a disk, i.e. a “lenticule”, in the cornea by transmitting laser impulses in two layers. The lenticule is removed through a small incision. This better preserves the outer surface of the cornea, when compared with the traditional flap procedure. Thanks to the corneal surface remaining undisturbed, the risk of dry eye following the procedure is significantly lower using the SMILE method. Studies show that the results of a SMILE procedure are excellent in terms of both correction of the refractive error and the recovery.

The SMILE technique has been developed by the well-established German company Carl Zeiss Meditec AG. The first SMILE procedures in Finland are being performed by our experienced ophthalmologist Harri Koskela. The SMILE procedure is especially recommended for those who have an increased risk of eye trauma as a result of their recreational interests.

We assess whether the SMILE method is the best option for you in conjunction with the comprehensive pre-examination The other treatment options available are our established methods, i.e. Femto-Lasik, LASIK, PRK and ICL.
