MEDICATION AND BEING OVERWEIGHT CAN CAUSE AN ENLARGEMENT OF THE MAMMARY GLAND
Subcutaneous fat also collects in the breast area among men and, particularly during puberty or when gaining weight, the breasts of men can also grow. Some medications and treatments (e.g. hormone treatment for prostate cancer) and steroids have swollen mammary glands as a side effect. The symptom of the breasts of men growing and beginning to resemble female breasts is called gynaecomastia and is rather common.
In some cases, exercise and weight loss can alleviate the problem and surgery can be avoided, but if the problem remains, it can be easily remedied with a breast reduction. During the breast reduction, fat and/or glandular tissue in the breast is removed, along with excess skin in some cases.
Usually, the problem is aesthetic, but a breast reduction due to gynaecomastia can also be performed for medical reasons.
