Irritable bowel syndrome is a common cause of stomach problems. It is twice as common in women as in men. This syndrome is sometimes referred to as an irritated colon (also colon irritabile), but it causes symptoms in the intestines as a whole.

This syndrome is considered a functional bowel disorder. Even thorough examinations may not reveal any visible cause for the symptoms in the bowel, but the normal function of the bowel is disturbed, causing embarrassing and even painful symptoms.

Many people suffering from this syndrome have more gas than usual. With some patients the amount of gas is normal, but the bowel contracts easily and reacts strongly at the stretching of the bowel wall, which causes a feeling of pain. This ailment is not dangerous, but it can cause problems in everyday life and should therefore be treated.

  • Bloating and gas that get worse towards the evening
  • Non-specific abdominal pain in various parts of the stomach
  • Irregular bowel movements; both diarrhoea and constipation
  • Incomplete bowel movement.

The presentation and number of symptoms varies. Sometimes the symptoms manifest themselves quite often and they are painful; at other times they appear infrequently and are only minor.

No specific or unambiguous causes can be defined for the onset of irritable bowel syndrome.

The type of food, however, has been found to have a clear effect on the onset of the symptoms. Similarly, for some patients psychological factors increase the symptoms as the bowel reacts to anxiety and nervousness. Depression has also been found to affect bowel movements.

If you are having new stomach problems or the symptoms are prolonged, it is worth seeing a specialist. That way we can rule out malignant diseases and eliminate unfounded anxiety. The specialist will assess the need for endoscopy and other examinations and their benefits. You don’t need to be afraid about endoscopic examinations. At Eira Hospital, we can, if necessary, perform your procedure while you are sedated.

The symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome can often be alleviated by a change in diet, by avoiding certain ingredients. Request further information from a nutritionist.

Medication may also help. Medication used for constipation and reducing the contractions of the bowel may alleviate the symptoms. Some patients find psychotherapy or hypnosis treatment beneficial.

Most stomach and intestinal issues are harmless, but it's good to have them checked early

Most common stomach and intestinal symptoms have a functional or otherwise treatable cause with modern methods. However, it’s still important to investigate them and identify the underlying reason.

Book an appointment with a specialist if you have a new symptom in the stomach or intestinal area.
The consultation may help rule out a serious condition and ease unnecessary worry.
