Optician's pre-examination
The pre-examination is comprehensive
During the initial evaluation the following is measured using a range of instruments:
- your eyes’ health status
- thickness shape and topography of the cornea
- visual acuity (minus and plus values and astigmatism)
- intraocular pressure
When nesseccary: optical tomography of the retina (OCT)
On the basis of these measurements, the optician can determine whether laser vision correction or refractive lens exchange can be performed and whether you can get rid of your glasses. If the examination indicates that you have an eye disease, you are recommended to consult an ophthalmologist for further examination. Set aside one hour for the pre-examination The hospital optician performs the initial evaluation, but the ophthalmologist always decides on the treatment method and the patient always meets the ophthalmologist prior to the treatment.
For whom are laser vision correction and refractive lens exchange suitable?
Laser vision correction is performed on people who are over 18 years of age. The choice of either laser vision correction or refractive lens exchange depends on strength and eye structure.
With refractive lens exchange, both those who are short-sighted and those who are long-sighted can get rid of their glasses. Make an appointment for the optician’s initial evaluation and we will work out whether one of these treatments is appropriate for your eyes. You can also make an appointment with the optician if you have been diagnosed with a cataract, want to have it removed and want to get more information about the lens options.
We recommend that people over the age of 60 have their eyes examined by an ophthalmologist, who will best examine the client's optical health and whether refractive lens exchange is appropriate. If the ophthalmologist detects the beginnings of a cataract or you suspect this yourself, it is preferable to make an appointment for the ophthalmologist’s initial evaluation for cataract surgery, where you will meet the surgeon who will perform the procedure and find out more about different lens options
LASER VISION CORRECTION IS NOT PERFORMED IF:
- you are under 18 years of age
- you are pregnant, or it is less than six months since you gave birth
- you are breastfeeding, or it is less than four months since you breastfed
- you have an eye disease, e.g. cataracts
- you have a disease that affects vision (diabetes, rheumatism)

Book an appointment for an optician’s pre-examination for laser eye surgery!
During the hospital optician’s 60-minute pre-examination, your eye health will be assessed and the most suitable surgical method for you will be determined.
Attending the pre-examination does not obligate you to book a surgery appointment.
Please note that you must be without contact lenses for one week before the pre-examination, and pupil-dilating eye drops will be used during the exam, which will blur your near vision for the rest of the day.

SMILE laser vision correction
Thanks to the latest SMILE technology, the eye's refractive error can be corrected without the traditional corneal flap. This keeps the surface layer of the eye more intact and reduces the risk of dry eyes. Studies show that the treatment results of SMILE surgeries are excellent. Here in Eira we are using the latest laser equipment Zeiss VisuMax 800.
