Reflux
Reflux is most often caused by a hiatus hernia
In reflux, the stomach contents spill up into the oesophagus, causing heartburn. The acidic gastric juice may cause a severe infection of the oesophagus. This regurgitation is called reflux and is most often due to a hiatus hernia, where the upper part of the stomach pushes up into the chest cavity through an enlarged oesophageal gap.
Consultation with the personal nurse at eira stomach clinic
You do not need to know which specialist you should see – your Personal Nurse at the Stomach Clinic will refer you to the correct one. The Personal Nurse at the Stomach Clinic is a nurse who will chart your symptoms and their duration during your first visit and determine possible causes for them and review your former diagnoses, if any. You can book your first consultation with your Personal Nurse conveniently via our online booking. You can also contact your Personal Nurse later on.
You can, if you wish, book an appointment directly with one of the specialists at Eira Stomach Clinic. We want to provide you with the mode of operation that suits you best – from your perspective.
Common symptoms of reflux
- A sensation of having a lump in your throat
- Heartburn or pain
- Burning feeling behind the breast bone that is sometimes confused with heart-related chest pain
- Hoarse voice
- Chronic cough.
Examinations and treatment methods of reflux
Reflux is initially treated through lifestyle changes and with medication. But sometimes this does not help and surgery is necessary.
A gastroscopy, i.e. endoscopy of the stomach, can be used for determining the best treatment method or before possible surgery.
You don’t need to be afraid about endoscopic examinations. At Eira Hospital, we can, if necessary, perform your procedure while you are sedated.
Most stomach and intestinal issues are harmless, but it's good to have them checked early
Most common stomach and intestinal symptoms have a functional or otherwise treatable cause with modern methods. However, it’s still important to investigate them and identify the underlying reason.
Book an appointment with a specialist if you have a new symptom in the stomach or intestinal area.
The consultation may help rule out a serious condition and ease unnecessary worry.
