Abdominoplasty

Pregnancy, major changes in weight and chronic obesity stretch out the abdomen’s muscular membrane, causing the abdominal muscles to separate and allowing the abdomen to bulge and hang out like a bag. Abdominoplasty is appropriate in such cases.

Surgery to get rid of excess fat and skin on the stomach

Abdominoplasty is a very common operation. During the surgery, fat and excess skin are removed from the lower part of the abdomen and abdominal muscles that have been stretched out by pregnancy or excess weight are tightened. It is possible to correct any hernia or previous surgical scars at the same time.

Recovery takes 3–4 weeks, during which time the patient needs to use a truss and avoid physical exertion. The surgical cut is made so low that it is covered by underwear or a bikini.

If the excess fat and skin also extends to the rear of the body, what is known as a circumferential abdominoplasty is required in order to have the maximal effect. If the weight loss is in the tens of, or even over one hundred, kilograms, it is often a good idea to perform a more exhaustive lower body-lift operation. The patient has usually undergone bariatric surgery prior to this.

The best result is achieved if the weight has been stabilised

The abdominoplasty can be permanent if the patient’s weight is no longer rising. The surgery is particularly appropriate for those who have not been h elped sufficiently by liposuction. The surgery also helps patients whose abdominal muscles have not recovered and pulled themselves together following pregnancy.

The best result is achieved when the patient has got their weight down and stabilised it through diet and exercise prior to the operation. With the help of the surgery, which has given them a more slender body, they can use a wardrobe and move about in a way that was not possible prior to the operation. These patients are usually the ones most satisfied with their abdominoplasty.
